Description

Lepine á Paris original box 1850 complicated pocket watch 37jewels, 18k gold savonette with independent stopping jumping seconds and ¼ repeater.

18K gold, Savonette à goutte, case number 11711, Swiss case maker's hallmark l. Bole f, French import mark "Chimäre" (valid 1838- 1892), eagle head hallmark for 18k gold, dust cover signed and numbered "Lepine Paris No.6612". Except for a small dent, the case is in mint condition.

Bridge movement: grained and gilded, fantastic movement quality, the first "straight lever escapement with ring balance" developed by Louis Audemars around 1840. Finely polished steel escape wheel. Breguet hairspring with end cam, mirror polished and anglized steel parts and screws, 37 jewels, two hammers on two gongs, two barrels for the movement and the stop second. Repetition of hours and quarters, movement on the dial side hallmarked b p.vin 6066, for Bernard Poitevin Geneve.

It is extremely unusual to find these two complications at once, and even more so in an 18 ligne movement before 1850. There were very few specialists at that time, who were able to build such watches: with independent jumping seconds, the movement having two barrels, a jumping seconds hand, which can be stopped without stopping the main train (invented by Moise Pouzait in 1776). The seconds hand can be activated by a pusher on the caseband at 8 o'clock, and the quarter-repeating mechanism is triggered by a slide on the band at 5 o'clock. Very good, clean completely original condition, like new, working, no oxidation at all, Absolutely fantastic condition !!!!
Elegant enamel dial, filigree blued Breguet hands, central second hand, radial Roman numerals. Dial and hands are perfectly preserved.

Diameter 49mm, Cal. 18"" Weight, approx. 97g, movement no. 6066, 18k gold. with Lepine original box.
According to the stamp on the movement under the dial, the èrbauche was built by Bernard Poitevin in Geneva. The watch was sold by Lepine in their Parisian branch in Place des victoires No. 2, The original sales case is still present.

Jean-Antonine Lépine (1720-1814)
In 1744 Lépine went to Paris to work in the workshop of André-Charles Caron. After marrying Caron's daughter, he passed the master's examination in 1756. Lépine became famous in 1763 because he invented a novel mechanism for pocket watches with striking mechanism, which was published in 1766 in the "Mémoires de l'Académie des Sciences". In 1765 he was appointed "Horloger du Roi", one year later he took over the workshop of his father-in-law Caron. His idea to replace the back plate with bridges and cocks in order to make the maintenance of the clocks much easier led to his breakthrough in 1770. In 1792 he formed a partnership with son-in-law Claude-Pierre Raguet and henceforth called himself "Horloger du Roi". In 1815 the house was sold by his grandson. The various owners retained the name of the house until the 1920s. Subsequent owners: 1815: Paul Chapuy. 1827: Deschamps. 1832: Fabre (Favre). 1853: Boulay. 1885: Roux, Bouley's son-in-law. 1901: Ferdinand Verger. 1914: Last sale, 1919: Purchase of the stocks by Louis Leroy.

The Bernard Poitevin watch manufactory was founded in Geneva in about 1850. From 1860 onwards, production took place in Paris, at 22 rue Vienne. Poitevin quickly established himself as a good maker of complicated pocket watches and chronometers, winning 1st prize in the chronometer competition at the Geneva Observatory in 1882. He was so well known for his creations that he even received commissions from Peru. His successor l. Gironde ran the company from 1900-1935.
