The Zeitwerk is perhaps Lange's most unique complication, featuring a 'digital' display (showing the time with numbers , rather than having a hand to point to them). At its release in 2009, it was a controversial watch, upending a decade's worth of 'brand DNA' and transforming how the German brand was perceived by the market. Like many other Lange designs, it drew inspiration from the 5 Minute Clock in the Semper Opera House in Dresden.

While it looks deceptively simple, the watch is powered by a movement that is nothing short of extraordinary. While ordinary watch hands require a stead flow of power, the digital display requires the power to be released in very short, precise bursts to advance the hour and minute wheels. As a result, a 'remontoire' system is used to collect power and release it at regular intervals.
