Description

Longines 1940’s Saudi Arabia Cloisonne Enamel Dial Wrist Watch

For sale is a Longines stainless steel manual-wind men’s wrist watch, with a polychrome cloisonne enamel dial of Saudi Arabia, and the surrounding area of the Middle-East, decorated in four different colors. The watch is triple-signed on its dial, case, and movement.

The watch has a three-piece stainless steel body with flat angled bezel, snap-on stainless steel back, and rather unique round-hobnail curved lugs. It has a round 34mm case (without the crown or lugs) that is about 6mm thick (9 mm with the crystal), with an original crown.

It has a polychrome cloisonne enamel dial of Saudi Arabia, where Saudi Arabia is depicted as a very dark forest green, the nations of Africa are a bright yellow, the Nile River is gold, the other nations of the Middle East are white, and the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and the Persian Gulf are all a deep navy blue. The Saudi Arabian portion also depicts an oil well, two palm trees, and two crossed swords (all depicted in gold). All the boundaries between waterways, continents, and Saudi Arabia are also in gold.

The dial is signed “Longines” with the Longines winged logo, and “Swiss Made.” The ringed border between the bezel and the dial is also in gold with black Arabic numerals. The watch also has a subsidiary-seconds dial at the 6:00 position, which I have never seen in this (Saudi Arabian) model watch. The hour, minute, and second hands are all white. The polychrome cloisonne enamel dial of Saudi Arabia is in beautiful condition with no blemishes.

It has a 10L 17-jewel movement with a serial number of 7587031, which means that the watch was manufactured in the late 1940’s. The movement is signed “Longines Watch Co Swiss” and marked “10L,” “7587031,” “Seventeen 17 Jewels,” and “Unadjusted.”

The case number is 516659. The inside of the stainless steel case cover is signed “Longines” with the Longines winged logo, 516659, “Fab Suisse,” and “Swiss Made.”

A similar model, without a subsidiary-seconds dial and fancy lugs, sold almost a decade ago at Antiquorum’s June 22, 2013 auction (lot 106) for 75,000 HKD (about $ 9,700). Another similar example sold at Antiquorum's October 27, 2019 auction (lot 324) for 87,500 HKD (about $11,200). A similar model (without the fancy lugs), is currently advertised on the major auction platform in the world for $ 15,000 (item number 264028656824). The version for sale here is rarer because it has a subsidiary-seconds dial and fancy round-hobnail lugs.

The watch comes with a new black Hirsch lizard-skin-style leather strap with a Longines stainless steel buckle. No original box or papers. The watch has not been serviced but is in proper working order and keeps approximate time, but it is sold in “as is” condition with no warranty because it is a vintage wrist watch.
